Supplement companies are required to follow Good Manufacturing Practices. Per the FDA’s website, it “requires persons who manufacture, package, label, or hold a dietary supplement to establish and follow current good manufacturing practice to ensure the quality of the dietary supplement and to ensure that the dietary supplement is packaged and labeled as specified in the master manufacturing record.” Good Manufacturing Practices require procedures to establish the purity, potency, and proper identification of raw materials. Manufacturers of supplements must report serious adverse events. In the last 5 years, there have been minimal reports. Over 95% of these reports relate to 3 categories—weight loss, sexual enhancement, and muscle-building. It is wise to be wary of supplements that promise magical results and to purchase supplements from a trusted source.

Supplements cannot make claims that they cure disease, but can make “structure and function” claims on their packaging such as “supports a healthy inflammation response”. False claims on supplements are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission.
